Grammar school decision has opened the floodgates for more selective education

labourpress

Lucy Powell MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, commenting on further moves to open new grammar schools, said:

“Nicky Morgan will rue the day she allowed the new grammar school in Kent. This decision has opened the floodgates and we are now seeing moves in many selective areas to open new grammar schools. All the evidence shows selective education is terrible for social mobility with even Kent County Council admitting yesterday grammar schools fail disadvantaged children.

"The Government should be focusing on ensuring an excellent education for all children not just the few who get through the grammar school gates.”

Notes to editors

1.   Yesterday at full council, leader of Kent County Council councillor Paul Carter admitted social mobility in the county’s grammars was “not where we would like it to be” as he launched a commission to look at how to boost the numbers of pupils from poorer homes at grammar schools.“  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-34608382

RIP Satoru Iwata 1959-2015

Had to come back to Tumblr to find loads of Iwata tributes and stuff. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t eventually shed tears after viewing so much fanart and realising the significance of Iwata to my life. Satoru Iwata became Nintendo president in 2002, and I’ve been playing Nintendo games since 2003, so really he’s been there, in charge of what is basically my main hobby, since the very beginning. In all my life, Nintendo games have been the constant no matter what was going on, and collecting certain Nintendo games, merchandise, magazines, and other things, is my favourite non-social thing to do. Thus, I owe Iwata many thanks for the successful running of the company which provides me so much happiness, and for introducing consoles like the DS which have given me some of my greatest memories. It made me glad to see Iwata’s passing reported in the mainstream media - it shows the true worldwide, inclusive achievement of Iwata’s Nintendo. Iwata’s sense of humour which he showed through Nintendo Direct’s and E3 presentations made him so much more than just the boss of a big company - he was a much-loved and admired man that achieved respect from more than just Nintendo fanboys. Satoru Iwata is a man whose impact on my life and personality is incalculable, and despite his death happening relatively early in my life, his legacy and actions on this earth will never be forgotten by me. His immortalisation as a Mii in my consoles and games will ensure that, and bring back the happy memories he has provided. The outpouring of mourning from even Sony and Microsoft are heartwarming, and Reggie’s speech especially add to the true loss we have experienced. My prayers go out for his soul, and for his family and friends.

Thank you Satoru Iwata, I cannot begin to summarise what you have done for me
